Album Update #3
Paper Tigers & Cardstock
As I type this, Peeka is tenderly recuperating from her recent vet visit (she needed a routine checkup and is a healthy old girl,) the air is undeniably getting and staying cooler, and the album making process is admittedly slow-going. I’ve had time to reflect on a few big changes to Blessing in Disguise, and I sent Matt (my engineer,) some edits to Infatuation. I’m realizing with this process that less is more.
For Infatuation, I asked Matt to add a whole horn section. It was a cool idea, but the song ended up sounding like what a painting looks like with too many colors - muddy. So we peeled back some of the instruments which gives the song a cleaner and cozier effect.
It’s really awesome to be able to just play though, and ‘throw sounds on the wall and see what sticks’ - if we’re going with painting metaphors … or pasta making metaphors?
There have been a few times though, where I let the paper tigers of fear and doubt run rampant in my mind and think, What if this is all terrible? Am I doing the right thing? Should I scrap it all and start from scratch? I have to change EVERYTHING!
Thankfully the paper tigers can be refolded into little baby origami kittens, and with help from friends and my love, I remember that it’s ok and RIGHT to do this work. I can do whatever I want (as in - sure I can change the whole song. I wrote it. I can literally change anything about it if I want to.) Phew!
As for merch, I’m looking into the type of material I want for my tote bags, and I’m checking out styles of card stock for the lovely post cards I look forward to sending. I’m chugging along, slow and steady. Again, expect a questionnaire from Kickstarter soon.
If what I’m writing resonates, feel free to share it with a friend. It’s always a really special feeling to connect with others who like my style.
Thank you for being connected with me on this journey. Knowing you’re out there gives me so much fuel to keep chugging along.
With heart,
Allison
